Dkk1 Hair Loss Treatment Stumbled Upon by Sheer Accident
The latest treatment for hair loss 2014 could very well turn out to be like other well known hair loss treatments, but could this be the best one yet?
You may have heard of products like Regaine, which contains the active anti hair loss ingredient Minoxidil.
Minoxidil's ability to stop hair loss, and even ignite regrowth was discovered by sheer accident, using the drug for a completely different purpose totally unrelated to hair loss.

Well the latest hair loss cure 2014 breakthrough comes from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where researchers were investigating stem cells with a view to treating tumours in the skin.
And it turns out they may have stumbled upon the latest Dkk1 hair loss possible treatment by sheer accident as well.
What they discovered is a protein inhibitor called Dkk1 stops essential proteins from getting to the hair follicles. And as we all know your hair production is made with proteins. This process happens via the intra-cellular and Wnt/ß-catenin pathway
The result is this stops new hair growth, so when your hair cycle goes into the shedding phase (which is natural) no new hairs grow in resulting in balding, or hair loss.
Now here's the thing.
As the researchers probed further they uncovered a couple of very interesting facts. The actual stem cells that are needed to produce future growth remain alive even after hair loss has occurred. They have not died, they are simply laying dormant.
How do they know this for sure?
Well what they did is they removed the Dkk1 protein inhibitor from the stem cells that were affected by hair loss, then they recovered the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway.

Remarkably, what then took place is that the apparently dead stem cells inside the hair follicles became active and resumed perfectly normal growth.
What is Dkk1 and why does it inhibit hair growth?
Dkk1 is a perfectly normal protein, and everyone has it in their body including you and me. In fact we would all look rather silly if we didn't have the Dkk1 protein in our bodies.
You see it inhibits hair growth in areas like your tongue, the palms of your hands, and the soles on your feet. So I'm sure you'll agree it's a very important protein.
The researcher in charge of the team, Sarah Miller had this to say...
“While more research is needed to improve our understanding of this pathway, our results suggest that therapeutics capable of decreasing levels of Wnt/β-catenin signalling in the skin could potentially be used to block growth of unwanted hair."
She went on to say.
"Conversely, if delivered in a limited, safe and controlled way, agents that activate Wnt signalling might be used to promote hair growth in dormant hair follicles in conditions such as male pattern baldness.”
Stem cell research implicating a treatment for hair loss is hitting the headlines a lot these days, each one looking more and more promising.
You probably won't see this treatment for hair loss in action, any time soon, and you're unlikely to benefit in 2014 as there will have to be a lot of tests and checking done to ensure that it would be a safe procedure.
And although this is a fascinating discovery that will hopefully get picked up by scientists in the hair loss field, the focus of this team of researchers remains on finding a solution for skin tumours.
